What can the web teach us about agroecology in California?
Team members : Crystele Leauthaud, Louise Auger (France), TBD post-doc or graduate student
Background context
Agroecology is one word among others used to describe sustainable agriculture. Contrary to organic agriculture, there is no database of agroecological farms. This work aims to web scrape the net in order to better understand who uses this term, why and how.
What is the current state of the project?
The methodology has been formulated and now needs to be implemented.
Proposed deliverables
A structural analysis of the stakeholders who use the term agroecology on the web in California, as well as a contextual analysis.
Methods for a general audience
Where best to learn about agroecology in California than on the web? Yet, information is scattered. We are searching the web with different tools based on python coding to summarize who in California uses the term agroecology. This database will then be further analyzed to understand in what context the term is used.
How will the project address policy and/or be policy-informed?
This analysis will give us a broad picture of a potential « agroecological community » in California. That can then be used to inform policy makers.
How, and with whom, will educational integration take place?
Results can be used in classrooms and within UC ANR to provide a contextual analysis of agroecology in California.
How will this support equitable regional transitions?
A specific analysis of the database can focus on the use of the term within the BIPOC communities.
