What are the faces of agroecology in California?
Team members: Crystele Leauthaud, post doctorate TBD, Timothy Bowles, Kase Wheatley, Camille Jahel (France)
Background context
Using the 13 principles of agroecology, we will spatially characterize agroecology in California, and look at its determinants.
What is the current state of the project & tentative timeline
This activity has not yet started. The tentative timeline is to initiate work in Spring with the hire of a postdoc at UCSC.
Proposed deliverables
Maps, an article, current existing “hotspots” and “cold spots” at a large scale
Methods for a general audience
We will first seek input from different communities working on agroecology in California to understand their vision of agroecological systems and their main characteristics.
Then, we will use existing spatialized datasets to build indicators that will represent the 13 principles of agroecology and look at correlations with structural and landscape determinants.
Finally, we will work with local stakeholders and discuss the results.
How will the project address policy and/or be policy-informed?
Input will be sought to get access to existing datasets. The results can be discussed with policy makers.
How, and with whom, will educational integration take place?
Results can be used in new curriculum
How will this support equitable regional transitions?
We would like to get input from underrepresented communities to be able to properly represent their agroecological systems in the analysis.
